Two Decades Impacting Our Community

Since inception, the J. Marion Sims Foundation has worked to support the needs of our community through partnerships with local nonprofit organizations. We have made grant awards of nearly $50 million since 1996.

Our History In Details

The Foundation owes its existence to the foresight of a group of visionary Lancaster County citizens. In 1994, the board of trustees of the Elliott White Springs Memorial Hospital determined that selling the hospital was in the long-term best interest of both the community and the hospital. The facility was the jewel of the community, with a long tradition of providing health care to area residents. But it faced an uncertain future in a rapidly changing environment not favorable to small, non-urban, stand-alone hospitals.

The proceeds from the sale also provided the community with substantial resources to address non-medical needs that have a profound impact on the health of individuals. The J. Marion Sims Foundation became the bridge connecting a long tradition of health care delivery to a new, innovative approach that emphasized prevention and education.

The Foundation came into being on March 28, 1995 when the hospital’s amended and restated articles of incorporation and by-laws were unanimously approved, creating the J. Marion Sims Foundation, Inc. James K. Davis was elected as the board’s first chairman.  The J. Marion Sims Foundation takes its name from Dr. James Marion Sims, who was born in what is now Heath Springs, SC. Dr. Sims was regarded as one of the most famous physicians of his time and credited with the establishment of the field of gynecological medicine.

20 Years of Grantmaking

Our Tradition

The foresight of the founders of the hospital lives on as this foundation derived from its sale serves the people and addresses the challenges of the communities in our area. We have been entrusted with a gift which is ours to share wisely, while at the same time we must protect its sustainability. To us much has been given, and from us much is required.

Robert Folks

We envision the communities we serve as places where all people join together to build on community assets for current and future generations, and where all people have the opportunity to reach their full potential.
