Cynthia Curtis

Coach, Town of Kershaw

Cynthia Curtis joined the J. Marion Sims Foundation team as a Community Investment Officer in January 2018. She serves as primary liaison to the Orton Family Foundation and other program actors of the Community Heart & Soul® initiative underway in Lancaster and Chester Counties. In addition to this role, Cynthia serves as the Coach for the Town of Kershaw. Cynthia develops opportunities with Foundation partners for community investment, resident engagement, capacity building and shared learning. She lived in El Salvador for 20 years, working in international cooperation in the Central America region. While there, Cynthia facilitated the establishment of an international learning center in El Salvador to train local and global youth volunteers, development practitioners and activists. Cynthia has substantial experience in research, travel and reporting including Central America, Cuba, Haiti and East Africa. In 2013 she relocated to the U.S., settling in Chester to join with family. Prior to coming to the Foundation, Cynthia worked with a local non- profit for downtown revitalization and the City of Chester. Cynthia speaks fluent Spanish, holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Secondary English Education, and Certificates in Non Profit Management and Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages.

Holly Furr

Coach, Town of Kershaw

Holly Furr analyzes and makes recommendations on proposals, monitors grantees’ progress, provides technical assistance to grantees, and is responsible for data management for the Foundation’s grantmaking. She also serves as the Community Heart & Soul® Coach for the  29714 area. Holly enjoys working with the not-for-profits in the Foundation’s giving area, as well as other community engagement organizations and committees. She has spearheaded the Give Local campaign to our area. She is the 2017 President of the South Carolina Grantmakers Network and is a 2012 Hull Fellow with the Southeastern Council of Foundations. She is a board member of the Lancaster Community Foundation, an affiliate of The Foundation of the Carolinas, Bethelwoods Camp and Conference Center in York, SC, and The Community Playhouse of Lancaster County. She has spent over 20 years working in the not-for-profit arena. She holds a BA degree from Columbia College in Columbia, SC, and is a native of Lancaster.

Alexis Halbert

Orton Family Foundation, Senior Associate of Programs

When she's not landlocked, Alexis loves to be in the ocean exploring underwater wonders in her scuba gear. She joined Orton from Paonia, Colorado where she was immersed in small-town life, serving as Project Coordinator the North Fork Valley Heart & Soul project. She was also Associate Publisher at High Country News, Chamber of Commerce President, and on the board of the Colorado Renewable Energy Society. Her hometown is Winnetka, Illinois (pop. 12,400). Alexis received her bachelor’s degree from the University of Michigan in Globalization and Natural Resource Management, and holds a certification in Project Management from San Francisco State University.

Alexis will serve the Foundation's footprint as a liaison for Community Heart & Soul teams and coaches.
